TTC Special Constables
Key Accountabilities
- Responsible for treating customers and employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of customers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer
- Carrying out the duties of a sworn Special Constable/Peace Officer, Provincial Offences Officer, agent and occupier of TTC properties in accordance with Canadian/Provincial/Municipal laws and established contracts, agreements, policies or procedures.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or its recognized equivalent combined with several years of directly related experience in law enforcement, customer service/hospitality, healthcare or social services
- Experience working equitably with diverse community groups including Indigenous, Black and racialized communities, people with disabilities, newcomer communities, low-income, multi-lingual groups, 2SLGBTQ+ and other prioritized communities is considered an asset
- Comprehensive knowledge in de-escalation strategies and understanding of mental illness and/or addictions and complex medical issues are considered an asset
- Strong and effective interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills; and the ability to be diplomatic, tactful, patient and courteous while providing a high level of customer service
- Strong situational assessment, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills, including the ability to apply these skills in stressful, challenging and dangerous situations
- Solid administrative and organizational skills to prioritize and complete planned/unplanned duties including investigations, patrol, enforcement activities, incident/emergency response, criminal/internal investigations, business plan assignments, etc.
- Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Mental Health Act, Liquor License and Control Act, Trespass to Property Act, TTC By-Law No. 1 and other municipal, provincial and federal statutes relevant to the work will be considered an asset
- Working knowledge of computers, applications and systems related to the work (Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, etc.)
- Must pass the TTC Special Constable recruitment background investigation as required and established training standards
- Must pass annual mandatory re-qualification training and tests
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Special Constable status in accordance with any established Agreement
- Must possess a valid, non-probationary Province of Ontario class G Driver’s License prior to application
