Know before you go: Five TTC tips for a smoother trip

The TTC brings a lot of people together: commuters, students, appointment-goers, concert crowds, errand-runners and everyone in between. Since we’re all sharing the ride, a few small habits can go a long way toward making the trip better for everyone.

Luckily, being a thoughtful TTC customer doesn’t take much – here are five quick tips for a smoother trip.

1. Let people off before you get on

Before boarding a bus, streetcar or subway train, step to the side and let customers exit first. Waiting for a few seconds, especially when it’s busy, helps everyone board and exit faster.

2. Keep doors and aisles clear

If you’re not getting off at the next stop, try not to stand in doorways whenever possible – move toward the centre of the vehicle or subway train to make room for others. Avoid blocking the aisle with your bag or other items by keeping them close to you.

3. Take off your backpack or bag

Backpacks take up more space when worn on your back and can bump into other customers. On a crowded vehicle, remove your backpack and hold it at your side, on your lap, or place it on the floor between your feet.

Remember: Seats are for people, not bags – keep seats available for customers, especially when vehicles are busy. In general, avoid putting bags, feet or belongings on seats.

4. Be aware of priority seating

Offer your seat when you see someone who may need it and give up your seat when asked – not every need is visible.

5. Speak quietly and use headphones

Respect our shared space by keeping conversations, whether in person or on the phone, at a reasonable volume, and listening to audio with headphones.
