What we are doing and why

In September 2022, the City of Toronto and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) started work on a series infrastructure upgrades on Adelaide Street. The work involved:

  • replacement of the 100+ year old watermain and City-owned portion of substandard water services from York Street to Victoria Street
  • reinstatement of eastbound streetcar track system on Adelaide Street from Charlotte Street to York Street
  • relocation of the cycle track from the south to the north side of the street from Bathurst Street to Parliament Street. Learn more about the benefits of relocating the cycles track on Adelaide Street
  • installation of new bike signals
  • modification of traffic signal timing
  • pedestrian safety improvements at various locations from Bathurst Street to Parliament Street

Construction on the Ontario Line will require a prolonged road closure on Queen Street West (St. James Street to Yonge Street). As a result, the 501 Queen streetcar will be diverted to Adelaide Street (eastbound) and Richmond Street (westbound). In an effort to prepare for the diversion, the City will replace the 100 year old watermain on Adelaide Street (York Street to Victoria Street). At the same time, the ageing streetcar tracks on Adelaide Street (Charlotte Street to York Street) will be reinstated to create additional TTC route diversion options in the downtown core.

As of December 2022, the City’s contractor has completed reinstating TTC streetcar tracks from Spadina Avenue to York Street, and lane restrictions are now cleared. Currently ongoing, Adelaide Street from Bay Street to Victoria Street is reduced to one shared lane for crews replace the watermain.
